Remote Learning

The Co-op School community successfully engaged in remote learning last year, due to COVID-19 and is prepared for a hybrid model, if necessary, at any point in the future. Now more than ever, we’re grateful for our community. At a time when everything feels uncertain, we find comfort and encouragement knowing that you are active, supportive, and engaged.

We are proud that while navigating a complex storm of educational and societal changes, The Co-op School acted swiftly to responded to this emergency situation, starting remote learning for all three programs on March 16, 2020. Our response included:

  • Zero days of instruction missed
  • 43% of school computers given to families for remote learning usage
  • 10 to 30 hours of live teacher instruction according to program
  • Specials classes continued through live and recorded sessions
  • Daily physical fitness opportunities
  • Virtual related services (OT, PT, Speech, Counseling)
  • Social Emotional Learning prioritized through morning meetings, advisory, restorative circles, mindfulness techniques, and daily check-ins
  • Trauma Response Team for Co-op School families and students established
  • Support groups for parents and staff created
  • Teachers maintaining connections with parents and students through weekly virtual one on one meetings
  • Daily opportunities for community engagement and continued learning through the virtual Playground Channel
  • Prioritized communication and feedback gathering with the community through surveys, phone calls to every family, weekly newsletters with classroom highlights and message board posts

We are in this together as a community, and with the guidance of our Co-op School values, we will find perseverance, togetherness, and even some joy in this difficult time.

Below are more highlights and resources that show how we virtually learned together!

Families currently enrolled should continue to find the most up-to-date information about day-to-day learning and communicate directly with teachers and administrators through our internal communication platform, Edsby.

Family Survey

Thank you to families who participated in our survey. Your feedback was helpful and is being used to reflect and fine-tune how The Co-op School provides remote instruction and engagement. As always, we are also concerned with the social/emotional aspect of what remote learning looks like for our students and our families.

Weekly Newsletters

The Mindful Monday” column is centered around self-care and wellness activities for the entire family. Each week, you’ll learn some tips for taking care of your mental health. The column is written by Hannah Sherman, The Co-op School’s Social Worker and Counseling and Wellbeing Program Coordinator. She supports our elementary and middle school students through direct counseling services and facilitates the 3rd through 8th-grade Health and Wellbeing program and the Middle School Mindfulness Program.

We also send out biweekly updates from all the departments in our school.

Here are suggested schedules, games, prompts, activities, and light learning projects that kept everyone active, engaged in a routine during the Spring Break. All of these were optional. Teachers also posted more specific classroom-level schedules on Edsby.

Virtual Sitters

Additionally, the middle school students would like to continue with their community engagement by offering 1:1 tutoring for younger students. They would also like to help families by offering some virtual babysitting—providing some fun conversation and screen distraction while parents try and get their own work done. Please sign up here if you would like to participate.
